Rule of the Bone #5

i believe that a coming of age story is when the character can no longer be considered an adolescent because of one specific event in the story that takes place. three examples of coming of age in Rule of The Bone could be:

1. when chappy steals the money from his mother and says "now im a real criminal". this shows that he isnt an innocent person at all. he is becoming an adult criminal. h is no longer an innocent child.

2. when russ leaves and bone has to go on by himself. he realizes that he will loose people in his life, but that is just part of living for him. he has to come to terms with that, and it is very adult.

3. when chappie gets the bone tattoo. he is no longer chappy anymore. he is bone. he became a completely different character at that moment. i think that the tattoo represents his biggest change or "coming of age" in the book.

i think one coming of age instance for me would be applying for college. i realized that im an adult now and i am going to have to start doing things in a very adult manner from here on out. it is going to be tough but its life.

another time could be getting my driving stuff down. i felt like it was sort of a right of passage to be a mature person. you need to be able to take your self places as an adult, or else you wont have anything.

Rule of the Bone #8

It was obviously satisfying for chappie, but i couldnt say that it was wrong or right. he did what he felt he had to do. revenge is often a necessity for some people. i think i would lean more to the side saying that it was the riht thing to do, because if i was in his situation, i might feel the same way. the killing jason part. not the having sex with evening star part. i think that wasn't necessary.

I feel different about chappy now than i did before because he has become more mature. he still makes dumb mistakes but in the end he has learned so much and gained a ton of experience. after this instance, i think he is very different. he has done a very serious thing, that he himself had decided to do. it took a lot of courage to do what he did, and he made a very adult decision.

Rule of the Bone #7

I felt like the during the entire chapter something bad was going to happen. With all the guns and stuff, it just seemed like something was going to happen at any moment. So the ending didn't surprise me to much. I figured that somebody was going to die, and it just happened to be I-Man. This is pretty typical for Chappie because no matter what, he always seems to end up on his own. Every time he makes a friend or someone who he thinks of as a teacher, they leave.

This book greatly utilizes the the theme "man's inhumanity to man". Like in chapter 19, I-Man gets shot in the head of course. This is because, for the most part, humans are only looking out for themselves and their best interests. The bikers are a great example of this too. They all lived together, but they only really cared about themselves. They cared about their own motorcycles and their own stuff and their own drugs, not everyone's stuff.

I think. ultimately, that its Nighthawk's and all their fault. i mean, they shot him. But you cant help think that if I-Man had never gotten involved in that drug trade with those people, he would have never gotten killed by them. But of course, if he hadn't joined that drug trade, something else bad might have happened to him in a different way. Its hard to tell, but i really thing that it is Nighthawk's fault.
